It began with the Romans - Constantine made it the state religion. Then, when the Goths conquered Rome, they kept the administrative structure intact - and permitted their people to convert to Christianity - because it's easy to make laws and govern people when you have a single God - as compared to multiple Gods. Then the remaining Germannic tribes also adopted Christianity when they defeated the Goths and took over the administrative infrastructure of Rome.
