I can't speak for the other garbage branches, but the USMC does not teach krav maga. The USMC teaches MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) which is several styles put together tailored for situations on the battle field. I forget which styles it is made of but it's mostly Japanese schools mix with gunfu and noif fighting.

Almost any martial art or self defense style is fine. People with experience and knowledge and practice of moves have an advantage over people who just know how to throw wild punches. However, most of the difference in fighting ability is in strength and size, and the difference in fighting style is marginal when one is much bigger and stronger. It is really more of an issue in sport where you are putting 2 experienced and similarly sized fighters against each other. In the military the difference would also be more noticeable between fighting styles, because they are all trained military aged men, but soldiers aren't and shouldn't be getting in fist fights with their enemy.

Self-defense is trying not to die as best as you can. Why the fuck would you teach boxing, when there's no kicks, or any other style that doesn't call for poking eyes and kicking in the balls because those are against the rules?
Self-defense has no rules. You bite, poke, do WHATEVER it takes to survive/stop the aggressor. Krav Maga teaches you how to do those things effectively.
It's a legitimate self defense art.

US troops are to an extent. Boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and bjj are all part of mcmap. Mcmap (marine corps martial arts program) is basically a watered down mma course. Krav is a meme.
