we are saved by grace in Christ, which is a gift that we accept by faith, and by faith we are to live and as we walk deeper with Christ are reformed in His image... works (conforming to the commandments & living as Christ lived) follow from true faith
claiming Christ's name alone isn't enough, In Mat.7:21-23, we see Jesus speak of a people who proclaim His name and perform good deeds in it, and yet are rejected nonetheless, “21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
In Rev.3:15-16 we learn about the qualities by which God accepts and rejects a soul, “15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” You see, it is not the quantity of “good works” that we engage in, or even the apparent success of those works, it is the heat by which we pursue them – what is our motive? Do our good works spring forth from a heart that burns with love and devotion for our Creator, or are we only moved by a mere passive, intellectual acceptance that as Christians we have to engage in such works? If our faith is genuine we will be moved by a burning spirit to serve our Lord the best we can, for He is the One Who saved us from death, eternal – having been “...made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” [Rom.6:17].
