I know that traditionally, for example in painting, frontal nudity is hidden behind pubic hair. It's as if it would be considered distasteful to show it explicitly.
But there are nudist and naturist (or FKK in general) areas around the world who aren't related at all to pornography, yet both women and men can explicitly show their genitals without it being considered obscene or pornographic.
So my take is that it's possible to have "tasteful" explicit nudity, as long as there's no one touching the genitals... It's possible, but indeed because of our culture it would be seen as pornographic by most people
