Fighting games started in arcades and tons of poeple find it easier to use controllers that mimic the original arcade layouts. They have one large stick for movement and a six button layout since the early arcade games almost always had L/M/H punches and kicks.
Since these controllers, called fight sticks, tend to be custom made anyway, people get custom graphics for the faceplate and sides. If you don't plan on bringing it with you to a tournament or anything you can make them as cringe as you like. It's not like you're going to show it off to anyone but other basement dwellers on 4chan.
Also, if you're going to ask a basic question, at least contribute to the thread...
