>>1410941Random person here. Thought I would try my hand at this whole re-coloring thing. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I think I've learned how it's done.
I used the Gimp, but I think these are all basic tools. Use select by color and then the other selection tools to pick out what you want to change the color of, then create a duplicate layer and turn the selection into a mask. I fucked up here; tried to use a feathering value of three or four pixels, but I should have used one or none. With a mask in place, you can fine-edit the mask with a brush or pen.
Once you have a separate layer with a mask, you can change colors using hue-saturation or change values using "Curves" (not sure what that is in Photoshop). Since this was primarily dark to light, I just used Curves.
I also fucked up on thinking about this as a pyramid of layers. It would have been easier if I had worried primarily about the edges of the top layer (hair in my case), then any edges from the next layer down with the top layer would be really easy (the skin layer can include as much hair as there is, but it won't show since it's below).
