>>1656947>>1656948>>1656952>>1656983It is random. The pillar you have to leave alone is different every time. However, it's always a pillar in the main room (the grey pillar by the hint either does nothing, or just is never a "failure" choice).
Here's a post that explains it. It's probably a simple as hell puzzle, but unless you know Japanese you're basically going in blind.
"Here is how to get past the temple pillar stage:
Go in and then up the stairs to the left. Break open a wall and there will be a room with a tanuki-looking statue and some vertical writing in the background.
The first two lines will always be:
のこすたべし
はしたらを
The third (rightmost) line changes and this is the clue for what pillar NOT to break. The order you break the other pillars in doesn't seem to matter.
みたどりの = don't break green
きいたちの = don't break yellow
あたおい = don't break blue
If you don't see either of these three, then don't break red."
For those who don't know, if you break the wrong pillar, then it's an automatic Game Over, and you cannot save until you complete that stage.
And for the record, you save by pressing the attack button on the overworld.
