It's primarily an adventure story that uses the Holy Grail War as a framing device to explore (and explore and explore) the themes of self-identity, one's ideals and the conflict they will inevitably lead to one having with reality, and how to face that.
It won't prepare you for "typical" eroge, which serve primarily as spanking material. Fate stay/night is much more in the vein of Tsukihime (set in the same universe) and Utawarerumono.
If you do play it, try to play the PC version with the easily found voice patch.
