There are other ways to take the character than that, of course, but the genderbending is a large part of what makes Ranma so interesting as a character.
As sidreN mentioned above, it could be done via crossdressing or a Medea mix-up (might not even be a failure, if you think about it), or beyond those ideas it could be a quality of someone in Medea's coven (as far as I can predict with the information on my side of the screen), and I think any of those could be made to work pretty well if you're interested in any of them.

D also sounds interesting, and I like G because it's also kinda fun to see girls focus on getting across the finish line first amid the ribbon-hunting and... indulgence. If it can lead to something lewd, all the better.
