Monmusu was, as a series, pretty trash (tho the memes and fanart derivatives were fun), mostly because it didn't try hard enough to justify the constant boobage.
To-Love ru did the same thing, but has some fun ideas.
DxD has lots of ecchi, but makes it meta as hell as well as have actual plot with the "plot".
In all considerations it was basically an ecchi fanfiction of World Mythologies that, to Ichibumi's surprise, hit off rather well, and garnered attention. Essentially he did what few Harem anime manage to do, and that's make his ero-fest's story have enough hidden depth to make it interesting past basic concepts.
