Long story short, thanks to the guy who whitened up that mihoshi picture in the previous thread, I found a way to do it in Photoshop.
Basically, what you want to do is go to Select-->Color Range, and while manipulating the fuzziness and the color selectors, get the area you want to change.
Once you get what you want selected (the Color Range is the easiest way to do it, though it seems as if it's only really good at whitening things, I guess it's because when you try to darken something, the lighter colors show through a lot more noticeably than the other way around), go to Image-->Adjustments-->Levels. You're going to want to look at the top level bar and move the white and the grey arrows, and move them around. Move the white one first, and then move the grey one around until you get the appropriate level you want.
