I cheat! I use free program called handy art reference from the windows app store. Here is an example.
For this I found a gen I liked and thought she could benefit from a sword and her hand grabbing the trunk looked terrible. So i used the hand art reference to get the hand pose and angles i needed. The program has some props like swords and guns.
I composite the hands using gimp, do some color work, and make minor corrections. Then I bing it back into stable diffusion. I do a plane ole img2img upscale using about a 0.4 denoise. I also add into the prompt something about holding a sword. Since the original prompt never mentions a sword at all. This one came out pretty good. This is the raw img2img without any other painting to clean things up.
