Obviously this example doesn't show specular directly, but it's the same basic problem: a small amount of light added to another value with 'sRGB gamma' is too dark if the second value is dark, correct if all color channels in the second value are around 0.45 or something, and too bright (which is what we see in the previous image) if the second value is above around 0.45.
