That shit was the absolute pits because you couldn't regex filter crap without getting a high rate of false positives because the bots captured and reused actual postings rather than attempting to obfuscate using alternative character sets or character substitutions. Add to that the randomised pngs to fuck around with hash checking the images and you had one mean as heck spam deluge. I use regex filtering myself, but the .hta shit seriously had me beaten because it was impossible to filter any reasonable amount of it.
