In life, Izumi was quiet and shy. Part of the reason she never found anyone to share her life with, she could scarce open her mouth to make conversation.
Her pretty, but not intimidatingly beautiful looks earned her attention from her female classmates, who all tried at some point to befriend the shrinking violet. By her Sophomore year, Izumi had learned to open up to a few close friends, and those friends learned to accept what communication they were able to get from Izumi.
One summer she and her friends went to a hotspring during vacation. When a hapless male wandered in on the bathing clique, an embarassed Izumi fled the scene a flailing mess. The awkward disaster cost the poor girl her life as she slipped on a bar of soap.
In ghostly form, Izumi is markedly more depressed. Though quiet, she was never sad. She was perfectly happy to keep to herself and her close friends. Her incorporeal form would have been a blessing to her at 14 when she just wanted to hide from the world. But at 16, having opened her heart to close friends, knowing the joy friendship can bring makes the sting of death all the more painful and depressing for her.
None of her close friends can see or hear her. In fact it seems like no one notices her presence at all.
