Did you know text gens can be keyed to image gens to bring up images with text responses, which people use for VN-like character emotion shots with responses? Pick a character and make good emotion shots for a wide range of different emotions and eventually it could be used for a VN.
Or have you invented an OC yet? Work on creating an OC and getting it as consistent as possible.
See if you can do a storyline with a series of gens like a fantasy adventurer getting into a fight with a monster. Do different angles and action poses and battle damage and stuff. That'll mean you learn a lot about tags you can use in the future.
Pick a Danbooru tag group page and do a gen with every tag so you can learn them all. Something like the hair styles page:

Some things like a breast size chart would be really challenging, it'd be interesting to see if anyone could do one and have it turn out well. Probably only on NAI.
