If you're using something like GIMP or Photoshop, there's an easy way to color images, though it takes a while. Make a new transparent layer over the image and set it to "Multiply", then use the brush tool set to "normal" - this works as long as the background is white or gray. When using multiply over a colored background it'll mix the colors. It sometimes helps if you select the background layer and use selection tools then switch back to the coloring layer.
To get a lighter gray, you can go to Colors > Auto > White Balance (in GIMP) and it'll whiten dark areas and darken the dark areas for crisper color.
If there's already color, you can change the transparent layer mode to one of the color/saturation/hue variants and color with a white brush over everything to make it monotone. Just remember that if you do this and plan to color afterwards, either merge the layer down or create a new Multiply layer on top of it.
Here I just did a simple color in the tone I used before so you can get an idea if you like it with the new background.
