You can split them from the existing part so they are separate and individual in the vertex/masking window and/or you can highlight the selection I've marked in the linked picture and it will only select vertex points that are facing the camera. So any points on the other side of the model cannot be selected without rotating around the model so they face the camera. This can make it hard to select points that are inside the model btw.
