In such hunter/gatherer societies, men hunt for meat, and women gather nuts and greens while watching after the kids.
As above, it is a division of labor strategy. Men risk injury and parasitic infection because such things don't do too much damage to a man's ability to reproduce. (And can easily be outweighed by his ability to feed his mate.) A pregnant woman, on the other hand would make for a poor hunter, and would fare badly if she tried to fulfill the man's role. The mere presence of a womb, even if never used, would consume calories and protein that a man's body would use to build muscle and stronger bones. So even given every equal opportunity, the average woman will be at a disadvantage in the male role. (I hope I don't have to explain why the reverse doesn't work either.)
