Are most people aware where ecchi comes from?
There's a very influential manga artist in Japan called Go Nagai. In 1969, he did a manga called Harenchi Gakuen, also known as Shameless School. It generally involves school boys and teachers peeping on school girls. Since this was targeted at a young audience, this got him in real trouble, and he was targeted by the Parents Teacher Association (PTA) as Japan's number 1 enemy.
Fortunately, the manga was really popular with its readers that it got several live action movies, thus making Harenchi Gakuen, the first popular ecchi, and making Go Nagai the pioneer of the ecchi genre.
Why am I telling you this? Because in 2011, another 70s ecchi manga by Go Nagai was adapted into anime. The result was a 12 episodes show called Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera.
Pic related, it's one of the characters from the show.
