The term seraph(im) comes from the root-word saraph (שָׂרַף) which means burning and is usually translated as fiery serpents, which would imply, as it is being used to name the angels the prophet Isaiah sees in a vision flying around the throne of God, that a Seraph is a serpentine angel, which is also on fire.
