Ecchi (エッチ etchi) is the Japanese pronunciation of the roman alphabet letter H, which in Japan denotes pornography of any kind. The H in Japanese comes from the rōmaji "Hentai", from the Japanese 変態 (hentai). The word Hentai itself means "change of form" and was used in the early 20th century in the form “hentai seiyoku” (変態性欲, abnormal sexual desire). Ecchi was first used in the 1950s as a euphemism to Hentai, but was later used as a general term for sex, and then erotic and pornographic materials.
