Extra controllable lights and fog are two of the main "other things".
While other effects can add lights or fog with extra render targets that draw all the objects and then combine the results with the main screen's output, that's slower and it's better to do them in the main shader.
If you just want to make a video better than the median MMD video (or a randomly-selected Iwara video), current shader capabilities are enough.
