The way I see it. A thigh gap could either be the actual gap formed by closed legs, or a theoretical gap that would be formed if her gaps WERE closed even if they aren't at that exact moment.
Most images in this thread actually do this successfully.

Images like that are the minority however. The thread is doing it mostly right.
If it looks like invisible sumata is taking place... it could be a strong case.
