What works well for me (I can sort through 1000 images in half hour) is saving to more than one folder initially. This cuts the work down a heck of a lot. Create folders for what themes you like the most, like ass, breasts, pretty hair, swimsuits, what have you. Save pictures by their main theme right away.
Then it's rather easy to sort when the folders get larger into smaller subfolders. Choose a workable number like 500 or 1000 and just Ctrl+click highlight all that fit into the category and drop them in their subfolder. You can make it as detailed as you feel necessary.
This has worked for me on on my 100,000+ images. It's not perfect since I don't use tags but as you can see even for such a large number it makes it manageable. If you have less than 1000 and/or care about images that go in multiple categories then you can tag them with Picassa. I think that's the one most taggers use.
