The other factor is that a lot of the formerly most-active posters (such as me) have gone to other distro-style sites of translated works and/or raws which limit access to those who are contributors to the system. In a lot of ways, it mirrors life where those who work get paid and those who don't work don't get paid. Of course, real life has welfare and bleeding heart liberals to support the net-loss contributors. The shift to private sites has been going on for a long time before 4chan; common people see examples such as private music or video sharing torrent sites.
