1 - Until now I've noticed better result with 3 skin level, mixing Multiply/Color-Burn/Burn: which combination depends heavily on the picture. In

2 - Instead of just painting plain brown on the masked layer, I prefer using "Gradient Map"
3 - What really makes skin tones looking good is the process of highlighting, and that's what takes more time (at least for me)
The rest is all about messing with levels and their interactions. Hope this helps.
