Sexual awareness usually comes around the same time one starts growing pubic hair. It's a representation of sexuality. It goes right alongside hips and breasts in defining what makes a girl a *woman* in the sexual sense. It's an easy psychological connection to make.
Hairless crotches exist in childhood (prior to genuine sexual awareness) and in erotica (art, pornography, etc) which tends not to be a representation of reality.
An overly hairy, untamed bush is still unappealing, because it sort of limits what you can do down there during sex (you still could, but it's still easier when you're not dealing with matted, damp pubes), but a complete lack of hair is also a turn-off. It makes someone look like less of a flesh-and-blood sexual being, and more like an object of abstract idealism. It just isn't sexy.
So yeah. Pubic hair is always good, though best in moderation. If you can't stand it, I dunno...sorry?
