A lot of Nipponese art is garbage as well; only the good stuff gets filtered through the culture and language barrier (same thing with anime in the 80s/90s). Plus, since the pressure to conform to the salaryman stereotype isn't as harsh in Western countries, many of the Western artists are too busy doing their thing for actual pay.
