The hymen tearing is absolutely a real thing, but it doesn't happen with all girls, and it doesn't always bleed when it does. The hymen can be torn by means other than sex as well, such as sports or other physical activities.
Also, since menses isn't sulfuric acid, it doesn't dissolve skin. I don't know who told you that bit about the hymen breaking down with the first period, but they're an idiot and you should stop listening to them.
