If you can use a certain kind of non-human girl in order to make the plot move forward (like a special ability being required), you can do it.
If I were to put non-human girls in a story I would try to pick something at least a bit more creative than standard fare elves and cat girls, perhaps a shape shifter, for example. Invent your own kind of non-human girls, and use them.
I wouldn't worry about making it "too exotic". I'd worry about writing a generic story with generic character types. Try to create something unique, something that stands out, even if people may dislike it. If you don't create something that is really your own doing then there is no (?) point in writing it, unless you a very skilled writer who writes in such a beautiful way that even a blunt set-up is an enjoyable read.
