I could never forget that moment. The moment where anime feet changed my life forever.
It was a few days after an especially difficult Christmas: my family was low on funds as my father had just lost his job. Both my parents worked though, so we weren't devastated. I got some clothes as my only gifts. Anyways, it was around 23:00, I had too much eggnog and my tummy hurt so I was making frequent trips to the bathroom. Upon my third return trip from the lav I heard something coming from my father's room. I crept up the stairs, each step creaking with tired moans, slowly getting closer to my father's glowing abode.
Through the crack of the door I see two shadows, one a man, my father, and the other a woman, my mother. They were yelling. Again. This was typical for my parents so I began to creep back to my own room. Then there was a slap, the sharp crack of my mother's hand grazing my father's face. Domestic violence was rare for us, so I returned to peeking through the crack.
I noticed something I'd never seen before this time though, something on the tube that was previously obscured by my mother's sturdy and matronistic frame. It was two perfectly framed pairs of 90's anime feet. Everything about them, their curves, their colour, the way the would they could curl and wiggle. Beautiful. Perfect. Pristine.
I was so entranced that I didn't notice my parents interrupt their divorce to notice me. My mother called out my name and snapped out of my ardor back into the cruel reality that was 3D. My eyes met my mother's and an unspoken exchange took place. An exchange that told my mother all she needed to know; that I was just like my father, a man who loved 2D feet more than his own lifeblood. I sprinted back to my room with a heart full of mixed emotions. I was ecstatic that I found a reason to love, a reason to live. Yet I was depressed knowing that my father would win custody and next Christmas I would probably get even fewer clothes.
My father did win custody.
