>MILFMILF as used by the average person today usually refers to a woman who's in her early 30s. She also has a husband and a kid, too.
A christmas cake, on the other hand, is a single woman in her late 20s (but usually 25-27 years old). She might look somewhat similar to a MILF in her appearance, but she is single - either because she just doesn't want to "settle down" yet, her mindset, or because she wants to actually marry, but nobody approaches her seriously. She might just have a shitty personality that chases people away, too.
"Christmas Cake" is something the Japanese rarely use these days, though. Why were women called a "Christmas Cake"? Because you don't really buy a Christmas cake after the 25th, do you? You're supposed to enjoy it just after it has been done, in time. Nobody really wants a stale, dried cake. You can still consume it, but would you really pick the older than the brand-new?
These women are quite often afraid that they're going to grow old unmarried, it makes some people want to marry them and calm them down. They can also be eager to find a partner, which could also be cute from a male perspective.
But like I said before, calling women Christmas Cakes is somewhat outdated in Japan, as it's acceptable for a women to remain unmarried into her 30s - there's no longer really any stigma. It's more or less dead, but it has a spiritual successor - a certain food item consumed at New Year's Eve (the 31st).
