From experimentation, you always need to have some kind of pattern around it, or it just wont work (for me it doesn't at least). I was curious, and compiled a few test examples for you guys to check out and try, and I'd love to know which ones you guys found best:
https://imgur.com/a/poCUdl4Those are all 85% opacity black masks. I was actually really surprised with the results, since I too thought it should've been enough to just darken the area, but it doesn't seem to be. After I found about that, I didn't think the checker pattern would work, since it's pretty predictable, but it did really well, maybe even better than the original. If it didn't work for you before, try it, even if you're on your computer. The phone works well for me, but if you can drag it freely around with the mouse (not with the wheel, but like a normal drag), it should be fine too. The important part is having control over the image. Also, don't look directly at the darkened area. In the image I used, I was looking at her bellybutton the whole time, and it seemed to work well. We are just using brightness (or lack thereof), for the delay, in these cases, so the effect will naturally be a bit faded, but the darker you make it, the better.
I wonder if there are any other illusions we can use.
