The stereotypical differences in modes of play are real, and exist in nonhumans as well. If you give dolls and trucks to young monkeys, the males will tend to favor the trucks, while the females will tend to favor the dolls. This is an expression of a psychological trait known as preference for people vs. things, and the difference in its average expression between men and women is one of the largest effects in all psychology.
As for why tomboys would be desirable, well, some men find the idea appealing that they could enjoy spending time with a woman doing things other than sex.
