Of course they're bulky because that's the easy way to provide uniform pressure, through gas pressure. However there's research into using mechanical pressure such as from a skintight suit instead. It actually works pretty well for the most part except for the oddly shaped male crotch that either gets crushed by the suit or explodes from the lack of pressure.
So in fact it may well turn out that female space pilots are the superior choice (at least the DFC kind) because they're the only ones where skintight suits actually work without balls to crush. And also because it's fucking sexy of course.
