Maybe some girls seem to not care and cut their hair short because they say they don't care about being attractive (and that's not true) and think it's one of those ways to demonstrate they achieved freedom, independence and emancipation; however it isn't necessarily a way you would assert said freedom, but of course you can choose.
I guess we keep our taste anyway. And in general, long is way cooler than short.
I even tried growing long hair myself. I didn't cut mine for a year but only reached 9" when I cut them.
They were improving my self-esteem and I used to feel so good!! I had to cut them sadly (not my decision...), and it was like something inside me broke and it felt terrible (not an exaggeration).
