>>2633975Rei was hot, I found her relateable, and through her I was probably also seeing my relationship with my mother. Cold, self centered, not really there, will never see you, will generally do as she's told just because she thinks it's what she's supposed to do to make you happy. ie, doesn't see you. Can't connect.
The Eva girls really were well designed. It is no coincidence Rei was Shinji's love interest and he couldn't quite get her away from his father. Oedipus, becoming a man by transcending the father, seeking out other forms of your mother in an endless and futile attempt to complete the individuation which never occurred in infancy, and the becoming a man that didn't occur as a teenager. Brilliant really. Being a hollowed out knockoff of a knockoff is also viscerally relateable. I remember thinking as a child that I wouldn;t be surprised if I was some kind of clone with someone else's memories. That this was captured so well is impressive.
As an "adult" (kind of) I ahve further developed my appreciation for the other Eva girls though. I liked Misato as well, but didn't feel much for Asuka. Now I feel like I get her, and she's pretty hot as well. For a teenager drawn like an adult, that is.
