If I actually had a good romsite without much bullshit to use and download ROMs via the browser I'd reply with it, but I don't.
They are right about using MAME, and the ROM dumps themselves are very unlikely to be malicious to the extent of being able to breach the emulation layer, so merely confirming that you have a valid ROM file and trying it MAME would be something I'd be comfortable doing.
If I were in your shoes I'd look search for recent discussion regarding romsites at various communities you trust and try them out one-by-one until you find something that works for you.
