There are plenty of Japanese products that have labeled on them "not to be sold/distributed outside of Japan." Online payments are also purposefully made difficult. Try paying on a foreign IP address and denied. Proxy it as a Japanese one, and accepted. No outsiders allowed.
Internationally everyone knows Japan as anime, video games, and Tokyo drift, with a large amount of anime having fanservice. We've also misappropriated the word "hentai" which only means "pervert." The Japanese don't call "hentai" hentai.
