Caelia is a human-turned-ghoul who "died" and was resurrected at a young age. After witnessing her mother get beheaded for a crime she didn't commit, she was taken in by an especially rich count and made to serve as an assassin--nobody would suspect somebody who looked like her, anyways. And, after her lord died, she was passed around to others who were similarly affluent. This cycle repeats for around two hundred years before she, not knowing what overcame her, kills her current employer and runs away. She doesn't need to eat or drink in order to survive, but she'll go into a comatose state if she doesn't eat any sort of flesh in a week's time. Functionally immortal and has no positive feelings about the fact.
Balthasar, her associate, is a traveling preacher of sorts. While he was originally born into a family of executioners, he was cast out for murdering somebody and started wandering around the country. After a near-death experience, he was brought back to life by what he believes to be a goddess of death and now preaches her word. Perhaps he was like this since he was born, but he doesn't take pleasure in most things that others would enjoy--such as eating, gambling, etc... Along with this, he frequently throws himself into life-threatening situations. In short, he's a man that doesn't value anything, not even himself, but he finds somebody like Caelia to be interesting.
