What if after working a long day at the Taco Maid Cafe, Mariel finds herself encountering an alien? She goes near it to pick it up or poke it with a stick, only to infest and possess her?
Maybe this alien is an intelligent species capable of feeling empathy, but is forced to possess her in order to survive. Maybe this alien Mariel actually feels remorse in doing so, and tries to protect that which she once held dear.
This eldritch abomination initially tries to blend in and make Alouette think she's fine, but ultimately we know that this outsider has a plan to allow others of her own species "keep the human populace safe".
Over time however, after taking care of Alouette she only feels her remorse grow, as she realizes what she really is about to do. She has no one else to turn to for guidance, as she hopes her own family (up there) aren't eviscerated or torn to shreds themselves by the incoming Grand Harvester armada.
She acts cutesy in order to both lull would be enemies before tearing them to shreds in the dark , or to just blend in everyday life.
This explains why she would be so strong and use an alien purple sword.
