I have over ear headphones when I ride and don't feel impaired at all. Just be aware of what's around you and it's no problem at all. I'm always looking over my shoulder especially before I make any moves. Sometimes if things are really hectic around me I will slip one ear off slightly for a bit until things are calm again.
