Learn to read cyrillic letters, you'll find a lot of familiar-sounding words on signs and extarpolate from there. Most people in Moscow know english so don't hesitate to ask around either.
St Petersburg can be a bit gangsta on the periphery, but you likely won't end up in these places. Anywhere a regular tourist can end up is safe. Piter has a fun /n/ quirk, the bridges go up at night so you can't get from one end of the city to another, don't end up on the wrong side. I recommend taking an overnight train from Moscow if you wanna visit it, you'll save on a hotel and get a traditionally russian /n/ experience. If you're brave, get a bunk on a plackart (pictured higher up in the thread), you won't regret it.
The hardest part would be actually getting to Russia, almost nobody in Europe flies there nowadays. Serbia and Turkey do, but if you are an american you'll probably have to do two relays.
>brown or americanRussians aren't particularly racist in person, actually. At worst they'll treat you like a curiosity and try to drag you to drink with them, to test your alcohol tolerance. Don't fall for it, don't drink with russians, but otherwise you'll be fine.
