>>2057262It was 118 km, not miles. Average speed was 28 km/h but I wasn't riding hard for the middle third as I was exploring downtown. Lots of climbs though, and I had the scariest cycling moment of my life that I'm still kind of processing... mainly addressing my stupidity and recklessness.
I guess I'll tell it. Found a random very steep hill and went for it on impulse. I saw a curve in the road and figured I'd be able to take it no matter what so got up to well over 80 km/h before I realized it wasn't a curve but a dead end without a fucking sign. The road was eroded at an angle and the shadows from the street lamps made it look like a gentle left-hander. I only got down to about 60km/h before I hit rocky shoreline where I just locked the rear brake and held on. Somehow I stayed upright for nearly 40 feet, cutting a deep rut through wet stones until I got to the finer ones and rolled out. Stopped about 10 feet from the water. The scary part for me is it could have been anything down there... a 10 foot drop, a culvert, anything. There were boulders but off to one side and there was nowhere to bail. I could have gotten knocked out and drowned or just died instantly. I checked afterward and the grade there is 10%.
Feel free to shit on me, I deserve it. I have learned a lesson that's for sure... one I already knew but I needed it reinforced apparently. Never doing that again.
