>>1238807Germany also is a bureaucratic hellhole so pretty much anything new will need years of expensive planning. Nobody sane would spend millions of Euros to test if we need overhead wires on some literally who lines like Lübeck-Lüneburg or Husum-St. Peter Ording because it would be too much paper work.
A good example would be the much needed S4 between Hamburg Central Station and Bad Oldesloe. It's a good example because it's probably the most used regional train corridor in Northern Germany. The following have to share the same set of tracks (one per direction)
>Regional trains calling at all stations (2-4 per hour)>Regional express trains skipping most or all stations up to Bad Oldesloe>Freight trains>Intercity trains to Lübeck>Danske Statsbaner trains via Fehmarn ferrySince it's easily the quickest connection to Lübeck, a lot of Lübeck's citizens commute to Hamburg for work, using the regional express trains. The S4 would replace the all stations trains and add a dedicated right-of-way all the way up to Bargteheide, meaning that only one S4 train per hour would ever touch the main line tracks, as Bad Oldesloe will only get a 1tph service, the same as today. The plan approval procedure started in 2016, but construction will not begin before 2021. And since it's a Deutsche Bahn project, uncertainty is always a considerable factor.
Pic related, future S4 towards the Northeast for reference
