giving it the benefit of the doubt I considered it might be a two piece crank, but it turns out the forging of the crank arms is just really thin.
I think the single piece system makes the bottom bracket stronger but the crank arms weaker
its an oddity on road bikes except that LOOK makes one piece crank out of carbon fiber
