That's called crosschaining and you shouldn't do it, because it's inefficient, puts wear on the drivetrain, and you can find the same gear in the large chainring at the middle of the cassette.
Don't ride the big + big combination either. It's best to avoid the 2 gears at either end with the extreme chain angle.
Now people will come in and tell you that crosschaining is ok and it's less not ok for modern bikes, but it really isn't ok for 80s bikes.
