Around here it's entire districts made up of dreary apartment blocks because of an urgent need for social housing after both world wars. Lots and lots of cobblestone that's absolutely horrible for bicycling. Traffic just as bad as in the US because although there are fewer cars there are also fewer lanes to begin with. Zoning is far better though, grocery stores and bakeries and butchers in walking distance wherever you live.
