I want to buy a bike.
I don’t know if I’ll actually stick to it but I work 2 miles from home and some dickwad just stole my catalytic converter. That coupled with $5 gas has me wanting to bike to work, but I don’t want to waste a ton of money either. I wanted to buy used but all I can find are bmx bikes and rusty 30-40yo hunks of junk that some boomer wants $200 for.
So I’m in Walmart the other day, I know, and I see pic related. A single speed 700c Kent ridge land for $148 and an 8-speed Hyper Urban for $228. Research tells me these bikes were $50 cheaper when they came out a couple years ago, so that’s a tad annoying, but they fall right around my arbitrary $200 budget.
My question is, for 4 miles round trip daily on mostly flat roads, am I being a dumbass for wanting to save $80 thinking I don’t need gears? The bikes both seemed “good enough” when I took a 5 minute look at the floor models. Is the Hyper a significantly better bike? I honestly don’t hate the ridiculous colors on the Kent I think they’re neat.
Sorry for the blog, input greatly appreciated.
